Located just 82 miles south of Cancun, this archeological site [from approximately 1200 AD] has amazing views of the Mexican Caribbean. Region = Tankah-Tulum aka the zone of Tahkah, Tulum and Xel-Ha

Do note, it is known for getting quite hot and I happened to visit in the peak of summer, making it hot like Africa. Be sure to dress accordingly and bring lots of water & bug spray.
Also, it is a VERY popular site, full of visitors during the day. Get there right at opening or a bit closer to closing time to avoid the large crowds.

Bring a towel and cool off with a swim in the sea below the ruin cliffs – National Geographic calls Tulum the 4th best beach in the world! It is no wonder this mysterious ancient civilization chose this spot! [It is also home to a gorgeous underwater coral reef].

Be prepared to walk from the small town to the ruins entrance. During the busier months a tram is available. The small town does have a couple shops and places to eat lunch as well [see map above for more detail].
You will definitely see lots of these guys wandering around the ruins. Don’t worry, the lizard residents are welcoming despite appearances.
Stay in Cancun at one of many all-inclusive resorts and book a Tulum exploration with your hotel directly, or stay at one of the few hotels on the Tulum stretch of beautiful beach. It is just a bus ride away from Playa del Carmen as well.
The main structure, shown above, is called El Castillo [the Castle]. It was used as a lighthouse long ago and is such a site to sea while swimming in the water below.
